Something to think about...

Case 1..

A friend of mine was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She was sent for surgery almost immediately after the doctors discovered it. During surgery, the surgeon ‘grossly’ (dgn mata kasar) saw that the parathyroid glands were also infested with carcinomas. He decided to remove all four parathyroids upon seeing this… After the surgery, my friend was given Calcium and also vitamin D since the parathyroid function is to regulate calcium level in our blood.

During a pathology class regarding thyroid and parathyroid disease, our respected lecturer emphasize that after the removal of parathyroid gland, one must be prescribed with a parathyroid hormone replacement therapy. Unfortunately, my dear friend is currently NOT receiving this treatment at all. When she told our lecturer about her only taking Calcium, he was terribly surprised.

Logically, when parathyroid is removed nothing will control the Calcium level. In my friend’s case, by giving Calcium she is basically safe from hypocalcaemia (low Calcium in blood) but what about if there is high calcium in blood??? How can her body manage this without parathyroid hormone? So my lecturer advised her to go back to her doctor and mention about this.

One more thing, my lecturer was surprised to know that the surgeon decided to remove all the parathyroid glands upon ‘grossly’ seeing carcinoma where as actually one only confirm that by pathological analysis.. She was again asked to inquire this.

Case 2…

A boy fell from his bike… He went to the doctor and the doctor confirmed that he was fine… He continued to have difficulty I breathing and finally died a few days later… Autopsy revealed that the boy had broken ribs and damaged bile duct… The family decided to take legal action on this case…

Case 3…

A man was hospitalized and was supported with a ventilation machine. Suddenly, the machine malfunctioned and the man passed away. After his death, some personnel went to check the machine and they found it to be ‘TOTALLY OK’. The family members blamed the nurse in charge for the man’s death… She was accused to be negligence…

Huhu My opinion on this will be posted latter… Take time to ponder on these cases… Is there any one to blame???? Or is it merely Qada’ and Qadar???? Or do you have any idea to prevent these from happening??? Till then Lots of love from future Pharmacist….
